Vivek Kumar_BLP044_Self Leadership_Sep'11

Ever since I have joined SOIL the only question I always get stuck at is what is Self leadership why is it such an important aspect of life and what will it take from to bring in that transformation in myself. With all these questions and doubts in my head I walked in to the classroom hoping to a sense of direction by the end of session and I’m glad I was not disappointed.

It amazes me that how comfortably I ignored the Self part in the Self Leadership which now seems to be the essence of Leadership. As Benjamin Franklin said “There are three things extremely hard: steel, a diamond, and to know one's self”. Before we even start thinking of changing the world around us we need to know ourselves first because unless we don’t realise our higher purpose in life we’ll never be able to put our heart and soul into it without which leadership remains a far fetched dream. Anil sir took us through some of these aspects and elaborated on the ‘S’ and the ‘s’ of Self Leadership. ‘s’ refers to the five senses of our body which deals with how we perceive things around us. It may vary depending on the upbringing, values and the experiences that we had in life. The ‘S’ emphasises on our real self and it is extremely important because only when we understand our self we move from being the Experienced to Experiencer.

Though knowing ourselves helps us understand the higher purpose in life, but we also need to understand what changes do we require to make in ourselves in order to achieve the same. To see the change in us we need to get ourselves out of our comfort zone and the only thing that stops us from getting out of it is us which is also referred as the HABIT effect. It is Hard to leave, Add as heart the heart wants one to, But our body keeps reminding of the pleasure and the comfort that we’ll have to give up on making it all the more difficult to get out of it, Igo referring to our Ego which we have to come over to see the Transformation in us.

All these changes that we want see in ourselves can only come through continuous introspection where the Identity X ray helps us do our job. It is technique using which we keep asking ourselves the improvements that we need to make in ourselves to be the Inspired Leader, what do we do different from what it should be. What are the hidden competing commitments that hinder our progress in the right direction? Its only because we have made some assumptions in our minds that stops us even from either trying or forces us to give up easily. The only way out is to attack these assumptions so that we start believing again, in ourselves and in our capabilities.

As the day ended I realised that it was not something that was something we couldn’t have figure out ourselves but we have been always been so hell-bent over changing the world around us that we forgot that we are also a part of that same world and if the change has to be brought about I should be starting point.
