Leadership is about freedom. Leadership is about independence. Letting people do what they want to and still having them aligned to a bigger vision is the core of inspired leadership. Leadership is not about authority or getting your way through but it is about accommodation, about listening and understanding others problems.

I have realized in this small span of my life that there are enough examples around us of people, institutions and organizations which fall in the deadly trap of “leader to manager”. Every individual, institution or an organization which started on the path of leadership should continuously reflect back time and again to check if they are leading or have they started managing.

Self leadership is another dimension which helps a person to evolve as a better human being.  There are many questions that one needs to ask him/herself frequently.  Simple questions such as “Am I building a capacity to learn?” “Am I implementing decisions that I take and are the results of those decisions positive?” Answers to these questions, when sought for in solitude, can be an eye opener for anyone. Self leadership starts from self realization, self realization of whether I am evolving each day and evolution from one state to another happens from one’s willingness to accept change.

We only accept changes when we develop an attitude to learn. The attitude to learn I believe forms the core of self leadership. The ability to challenge oneself and develop an attitude to be open to his/her surroundings helps a person to let go of his ego. To be a great leader, one should learn to dissolve his ego for the cause. A cause which is very close to ones heart and belief system should make every other thing which may hinder progress in that direction minuscule.

As in the words of Patanjali, one of the top thinker of all times, “when you are  inspired by a higher purpose,  you discover talents in you which you were not aware off and strange things begin  to happen to you”.  The first change that a person witnesses when he is inspired by a higher purpose is letting go of his ego. Ego, which builds a wall between a person’s desires and achievements, starts to shatter and it is then when ones desires becomes his achievements and the person finds his utmost satisfaction.

The concept of immunity X ray, is a piece of work which helps an individual to dig deep inside and understand the changes that one would want in himself.  It is important for one to first understand clearly the areas that he would want to change. Also it is important for a person to know why they want to change and what do they need instead. The answer to these questions would help a person better understand the hidden competing commitments. Once a person is aware of those hidden competing commitments, it’s imperative to unlock the assumptions behind these commitments which need to be overcome using one’s strength.  Also it is important to be in a company of people who already possess the quality that one would want to have. Considering all the sources which would guide me to acquire that quality a person can come up with a blue print of what and how he is going to trigger that change.

The above exercise could be very useful in triggering changes in a person and inculcate more qualities that brings him closer to be more self aware and be a better leader.

These were my learning’s in the Self Leadership class of Anil sir, which I believe opens a totally new dimension for me to explore. I think, it has given me lot of food for thought and make changes in some of the way I have been leading my life.
