Akhil Nair_MLP005_Self Leadership_Sep'11

After almost three months , the self leadership class continued his time it intrigued me with a concept of IMMUNITY TO CHANGE. Initially , the class started with revisiting some questions that Anil sir asked in the first two sessions.
What is the purpose of your life?
•         What are those values that  you wont compromise?
•         Who matters to you?
Then the second part of the session focussed on immunity to change ,Anil sir started with some simple questions-
Why is it that we often want to change, but find that we are unable to do so?
Why is change so difficult even when everyone and everything is aligned around the goal?
The answer to these questions is Immunity to change.
For this first we need to know why people resist change. It can be explained through the following points-
We all develop our own inner map of reality- within our mind we create a separate map of reality and we generally picture  ourselves with regard to that.

We interpret the world through this inner map- Our mind interprets things with regard to the map that we have created within our mind. We try to form things around this .

We have different levels of capacity to be conscious or aware of our own inner map and especially how we create our experience of life through it (most of us, most of the time, are completely unaware of this)

In accordance with this inner map we have our own inner commitments to our own personal priorities

These inner hidden commitments have a high priority and will over-ride any counter intentions that conflict with them

The high priority is assigned because the hidden commitment is linked to an inner hidden perception of our own physical, psychological, social or emotional safety

This hidden commitment is outside of our conscious awareness.

Anil Sir explained the Immunity map that was conceptualized by Robert Kegan which talked about Immunity to change and how important it is for transforming oneself to a true leader and how one can overcome his resistance to change. Every one resists change, people try to  limit themselves to their comfort zone. The immunity map consists of 4 stages in identifying and finally defying the factors that stop a person to attain a level of excellence. The concept is  designed to unearth hidden “core assumptions” related to one’s current “order of Development” . In my own case, I unearthed several very interesting assumptions. Some of them I was already starting to become aware of, and so wasn’t that surprised by—though I will say that seeing them in for the first time did kind of surprise me.
The first stage in the immunity map involves a person identifying what he wants to achieve in life and what his purpose is. He identifies the aim of his life, the goal he wants to achieve in his life.
The second stage of the immunity map is to identify the things that stop you from achieving your goals. There are certains  hidden aspects which affects your performance and will stop you from achieving your goal in life
The third stage is where a person understand the reasons behind the behaviour that prevent him from achieving his goal.
The fourth and final stage involves a person removing any assumptions he might be making that prevent him from achieving his goal. The removal of hidden assumption is really important in this process.
Change can be categorized into the following-
Need to change: Realizing that there is something which you want to change
Want to change: After realizing, whether there is willingness to change. The  individual takes a responsibility to change.
Actual change: Practice and getting comfortable with the change, bringing it into practice. Be it in behaviour or habits. The difference will be made in this part, here the individual successfully makes the change.
After coming to know about the immunity to change and why people resist change, I was clearly able to correlate my areas of development with it, how I aspire to change certain things and how every time I fail. I also understood why I failed . This was really a learning experience and kept itself to the fact that leadership comes from within.
