Nihar Routray_BLP022_Self Leadership_Sep’11

Who am I? Do I know myself? Why am I here? What is my purpose?

Pt. Shriram Sharma Acharya, my guru says- “Within each human being is unlimited wealth, an unimaginable source of energy. The only reason for his hardships and sorrow is ignorance of this true self. When he realizes it his sorrow will disappear.”

People generally raise their noses saying who wants to know the answers to these questions, I don’t have the time for this introspection, this is only for those who seek spirituality. But I would say it is intertwined with our lives. We never realized but spirituality is there when we are thinking about those numerous things, when we are doing those mundane things of our life, sometimes when our mind is stationery and we see the world spinning around us at a great speed. It was there when we yelled at the top of our voices when we were kids, it was there when we climbed that tree to pluck guavas, it was there when we fought with that someone and our mind says go and apologize lest it’s too late, it was there when we took that sip of whisky and it was also there when we fell in love.

So how can we ignore these questions when we are at this crucial juncture which is going to decide the remainder of our life. A Leader is a Believer, a follower of the greater purpose, he who believes in himself, he who believes in others, he who believes that happiness can be attained. And this belief in yourself will only come through self inquiry.

My sister sends me a forward- “Everyone is gifted around here but some people never open their package.” Have we ever thought why we are not able to utilize these gifts, probably we have been so blinded by our egos that we forego success by our hands. Life's experiences do teach us a lot on how to handle situations and how to handle people but being aware of them as early as possible and being aware of them consciously would help us to tackle situations well right from the early part of our careers. Anil Sir made us think a lot about ourselves- our habits which were preventing us from learning, our attitude, if we are putting in all our efforts etc. Well I know I won’t get the answers to all my questions so soon but my quest is already on; the heartiest fact was that Soil happened which has been created on the vision and some of the values which I believed in. It has helped me to put a conscious effort to find the answers to these questions so that we excel in our careers and lives.

We have done the fire walk so many times be it when we fought with our parents for something we believed in, be it when we had to break a rule or two in college for our friends, be it when we were scolded by friends for doing stupid things for the girl we loved, be it when we had to work long hours for the sake of our company but every time we have come out, we have come out stronger. It is only coz of the fact that we came to love all these people unconditionally without having fear of the circumstances. We have to just push this circle of unconditional love so that it encompasses all and this whole world becomes a more peaceful, compassionate place where every individual roams around with dignity and feels fearless.

We have discussed so much and said a lot but what happens if people, organizations and societies are averse to change. We need to understand the psychological dynamics of a phenomenon called competing commitment or the retaliatory human instinct of self-protection. So we come across this powerful tool called the Immunity X-Ray which asks us what we want to change about ourselves, what we are doing instead, our hidden competing commitments, assumptions behind the commitments and how can we get rid of these assumptions. However I could sense that it is not an easy process and is quite challenging. This process would be tremendously rewarding if we could bring out these competing commitments and this knowledge would help us cope with our inner conflicts that are preventing us to achieve our goals.

Looking forward to the Fire-walk :-)
