Chetan Ahuja _BLP019_Self Leadership_Sep'11

The very first class of self-leadership by Mr. Anil Sachdev was schedule to happen and I was very sceptic about it that what this class would be of, what is there to learn about self-leadership though I had heard about the leadership but self-leadership..? The class begins with a great momentum and colleagues sitting on round table facing each other ,which is also an add on factor to the flow of energy . I must had wrote this write up or Blog at that time only but still writing now and recollecting the learning’s is itself a new learning because what we recollect is what we had earned .Leadership has many definitions and we all know many of  those definitions as we had learned those definitions from our seniors ,peers and others but  still people get confuse between the two major aspects i.e. roles of leader and leadership .This is because either people try to become leader but still they are not clear of  their roles or they know their roles but somewhere  leadership action is missing.  But self-leadership is very different from it’s a leadership about leading one’s body and action’s, heart and emotions and intellects and thoughts. It’s about being led by one’s consciousness and spirits, about making conscious choices, about enabling others to be leaders.
These discussed traits of self-leadership are governed by the 6 layers of the self. These 6 layers help us to understand how we can lead by the essence, intellects and thoughts and others. The 6 layers are: the inner core layer is Mindfulness – The life giving force, Truth. The layer above mindfulness is sustainability –Ego-values/habit/fears –“wisdom”. The layer above the sustainability is Ethics-the intellect choices – “Knowledge”. Compassion the other layer, which is above the Ethics, compassion helps us to lead by Emotions. Information layer is above the Ethics and the top most layer is Diversity – which interact with the body 5 senses, perceptions. These 6 layers forms the individual concentric circles and they are not mutually exclusive as the flow of energy takes place through all these concentric circles.
This is kind of learning, which helps in learning self-leadership was amazing as I had never thought of this as the traditional methods of leadership were always in my mind. This understanding or learning helped me in initiation of transformation of my leadership skills.

The next learning of self-leadership was about the listening skills. We usually talk about the person speaking skills, how good speaker he is. But in this class of self-leadership I came to know that it’s a listener who makes a speaker a good speaker. Listening is directly co-related to mindfulness i.e. how mindful we are while listening. We got to learn this by an activity which we did in the class and experienced there itself in the class that how it’s important to be a good listener. The other face of Self leadership we saw in the form of a candle burning activity in which we burned all our thoughts, while interacting with candle light. These thoughts were those, which hinders the leadership from the emotions. The major part was the decision analysis framework, which helps one to take a responsible decision while going through the 6 stages of the framework.
Though I was not present in the second class of Self leadership, which took place after 3 months span of time but after having session input from colleagues got to learn major thing about EGO that how it hinders the growth of an individual. There is a direct correlation between three mind, emotions, and body and i.e. is Body is impacted by mind and all emotions are the product of mind. Mind is the mother of a self-leadership, which governs our emotions, which further governs our body actions. Ego lies between us and ours greatness. The biggest competency of leaders is to learn how to learn. The universe in which an individual lives consist of many things like happiness joy , sorrow but it depends on the individual how big is his  universe .We should move from the smaller universe to the bigger one and not to live in a egoistic universe. While moving to the bigger universe tries to see that are you rising in your own eyes? Another thing about learning is attitude and capacity .One should have a positive attitude towards learning and if a person is truly mindful his capacity to learn increases tremendously.
Another module of learning was the Immunity X-Ray tool. It’s a 4 stage model, which helps in learning the thought process, which goes within us, the changes around us and overcoming those changes when we are subject to situational changes. A self-transforming mind or a fifth order mind has been proposed to identify the challenges. Three dimension of the immunity to change are: change prevention system, feeling system, and knowing system. First phase is uncovering the hidden dynamics in the challenge of change. The phase two of the tool is how to overcome the immunity to change in organizations, individuals, and teams. The third phase is diagnosing and overcoming immunities in yourself and your organization by unlocking the potential, overcoming your immunity to change, surfacing the collective immunity to change. Learning at the end after studying this tool is that mental growth continues after adolescence, that there is a distinction between technical and adaptive learning, that people have an intrinsic motivation to grow, that these kind of mind-sets changes take time, and that they involve both thinking and feeling, that reflection and action are interdependent and enable each other, and that there needs to be sufficient safety and support for facing the risks in this depth of change of mind-sets.
