Deepmala Baswal_BLP062_Self Leadership_Sep’11

The session on Self Leadership was a part of our ongoing beautiful journey in SOIL. For the very first time in my life, I got introduced to Self Leadership (Thank you Anil Sir) during our induction and the second session came after a well deserved wait of 3 months.  We learnt that leadership should always begin with ourselves. Anil sir emphasized on the importance of practicing self leadership in order to be inspired leaders. Self leadership is the ability to control one’s thoughts and emotions. It is important to first rise in our own eyes, know who we are, know our strengths and walk the path of the 5 pillars to become a self leader. The “S” in Self leadership is all about our attitude, spirit and observer in each one of us. We must know the 6 layers of self, forgo our ego and imbibe in compassion. We also realized that learning is instrumental and becomes a vital component in a journey towards becoming an inspired leader but at the same time it’s equally important to put genuine efforts towards learning. For instance, the desire to learn but lack of effort is not enough. We have to take ownership of what we want and what we aspire to do and align our efforts in that direction. Only we can walk our self to success.

Anil Sir also said that if we take pride in what we do, love what we do and trust person with who we work, we would be able to enjoy our work and contribute to the success of the organization. One phrase I will remember for life is, “Work is Love made visible.”An organization’s asset is its people and their attitude. A person’s attitude/character is essential which leads to results; competencies though important can be built upon with experience and skills.

During the leadership session, Anil Sir gave us time to introspect on and discuss with our peers our thoughts on the following questions:
-          Who are the people in your life that matter to you?
-          What are their needs that you are moved to serve?
-          How can I leverage my values and gifts to serve these needs?

This exercise made us aware of the individual purpose which can always inspire us to move towards achieving our goal.

Also, one of the most important learning’s for me was that if we are inspired by a higher purpose, we would discover talent and path that we might not have known. The key is to be focused on the purpose and continuously strive towards Self Knowledge.

We can enhance our knowledge by using our strengths to achieve our goals. All of us have unique strength and if we are able to realize this and leverage upon this, we are on the right path of learning.

We also learnt about – “Immunity X ray” which we have not heard before. This tells us that the first part of change begins by saying “one aspect that you need or want to change”.  We were asked to put 4 columns and identify and put our thoughts in each column:

-          One thing that you want to change?
-          What do I do/or not do instead?
-          Hidden competing commitment that prevents you from changing?
-          What are the assumptions behind your hidden commitment?

We ended this wonderful day with a meditation and with a desire to imbibe in what we had learnt. We all aspire to walk the path of Inspired Leadership and be the true representatives of SOIL. The teachings from Self Leadership class will help us move that path.
