Richa Bharadwaj_HRLP032_Self Leadership_Sep’11

Session 1 & 2:

These sessions were conducted by Ms. Susie and Ms. Snehal Shah, about stress management. We discussed various types of stress, the reasons causing it and how to deal with it. Then there were some exercises taken up by Susie ma’am about letting oneself go and freeing oneself from all the problems and tensions. In the later session, we practices laughter yoga as a medium to de-stress.

Session 3 & 4:

We had a session on Self-leadership by Anil sir which was a very inspiring one. The topic of discussion was managing change – “Immunity to Change”. A person should know oneself whether he/she wants the change to happen or not and if yes then to understand how that change takes place.
There are always a series of questions in front of us. Yes, I can change. But, do I really want to change?? If yes, then what really is the change I want in me?? And the series goes on and on…..

Change can be categorized as follows:

Need to change: Suggestions taken from the external environment which makes you realize the need to change. This comes from the intellect.

Want to Change: Want’ is something which makes you realize from within. The responsibility to change comes from within and not from any external factors. This comes from the Heart.

Actual Change: Realization to change made into action and bringing it into practice. This comes from Body.

Sir asked us several questions, which if asked to self would initiate the change process. Some of these questions were:

One thing that I wish to change, develop in myself?

I wish to change my impatience and restlessness. I want to develop the tolerance level in order to be successful in life.

What do I do instead / or not do?

To adopt a calm and composed attitude. Be conscious about yourself that no matter what happens you don’t have to lose your patience and focus.

Anil Sir spoke about his personal experience of realizing the change. He told about his smoking habit and how he was unable to change this habit. He realized that smoking is not good for health but it was really difficult for him to implement it practically. This was because there was a conflict between his mind and his heart. His mind said that it is not good for his health but his heart refused to quit smoking. But at one time, there was such a strong feeling that his heart also supported him and that was the day when he quit smoking.

There are always some hidden competing commitments that is the root cause which competes and conflicts the commitment to change.

There are several stages to understanding this change:

Stage 1: To identify what the person wants to achieve in life/his goal

Stage 2: To identify the problems which are in his way to achieve his goal

Stage 3: To understand the reason behind these problems

Stage 4: To be strong enough to challenge these problems which is stopping him to change

As quoted by Winston Churchill one should remember that

“There is nothing wrong with change, if it is in the right direction”
