Our Day @ SOIL began with the Breathing and relaxing exercises with Ms. Susie Roy who is our revered Yoga guru and Ms. Snehal Shah our Chair for Human Resources Leadership. The exercise began with several exercises and pranayama while going to the Laughter Yoga Therapy which reduces stress and repairs the body from within. After the laughter yoga we were shown a slide about stress and the trigger factors. This also included the symptoms of stress which most of us were not aware until it was shown. We were told that research proves that some amount of stress is useful but too much of it yields depreciating performance and health concerns from a physical and mental frame of mind.

In the second half we were taught the framework of self-leadership by Mr. Anil Sachdev. The main basis of the discussion was Immunity to Change and the source of the discussion included the book named Immunity to Change: How to Overcome It and Unlock the Potential in Yourself and Your Organization (Leadership for the Common Good)

The discussion included the below 3 things

Need to change Want to changeActual change

Need to Change describes the situations which necessitates a change in an individual. Self-realization of the Individual or feedback to the person triggers the need for change. It could be because of self-realization or feedback. A person assesses the need for change due to certain critical deficiency in any section of the individual’s life.

Want to Change is also very important as the person needs to realize they whether they want to change or not. A person needs to be motivated enough to sustain the want to change as it is guided by Motivation and Initiative of the individual. Want to change can disrupt the entire process of change if a person does not want to change and this is the majority issue with people realizing the need to change but still not wanting to change.

Actual change is the final step as the person now has realized and has the necessary will to change but now the question comes that how will change happen actually. The process for the change should form the part of the personality of the individual and should be followed religiously. Actual change has to be monitored at regular intervals to measure the effectiveness. If we realize that change is not going in the expected direction then the process needs to checked and started again.

The individual needs to keep the change permanent to make use of it and the change which is brought through mindfulness and dedication reaps benefits in the future.

Anil sir explained the Immunity map that was framed by Robert Kegan. The immunity map consists of 4 stages which are as follows. The whole process has been described in the book.

· Stage 1: Identification off the purpose of Life

· Stage 2: Identification of things that stop you from doing progress and achieving the purpose.

· Stage 3: Understanding the things that are preventing a person to achieve the purpose. This includes detailed analysis of the barriers to change.

· Stage 4: Removal of any assumptions that he has made which puts a virtual barrier for achieving the purpose of life.

Please access the below link for information on the book by Kegan.

In the End to paraphrase what we had discussed on that particular day in words of Mark Twain

An old habit is a lot like a cow stuck on the second floor landing: you can’t throw it out the bedroom window; you have to coax it down the stairs and out the front door one step at a time
